The number in the title is answering a different question than you are
Capacity is the most quoted figure in appliance marketing and the least standardized. A brand picks whichever measure makes its machine sound roomiest, states it without qualification, and leaves the shopper to work out what it refers to. You are asking how much food this will hold. The listing is answering how much space exists inside the outer shell.
The gap between those two questions is where returns come from. It is worth learning the four units appliance listings actually use, what each one silently excludes, and how to turn any of them into something you can compare against your own week of cooking.
Cubic feet, and the part of it you cannot reach
Cubic feet is the unit for refrigerators, microwaves, wall ovens and dryers. It is also the unit most often quoted twice with two different values in the same listing.
The GE GNE27JYMFS french door refrigerator is a clean example. Its title says 27 cubic feet of total capacity. Its capacity field says 18.81 cubic feet. Neither is wrong. The description resolves it: 18.81 cubic feet is the fresh food compartment and 8.18 is the freezer, and those two add up to just under 27. If you are trying to work out whether the fridge side will hold a week of groceries for four people, the 27 is useless to you and the 18.81 is the number that matters.
Sometimes the two figures do not resolve at all. The Galanz GLF11US2A16 lists a total capacity of 11 cubic feet, a fresh food capacity of 11 cubic feet, and a freezer capacity of 11 cubic feet. Those three cannot all be true at once. When a listing does that, the honest read is that one number is real and the feed copied it into the other two fields.
The wider point about cubic feet is that it measures the empty box, not the usable space. Shelves, drawer walls, ice makers, door bins and the compressor hump all live inside that figure. On a microwave, the practical test is never the cubic feet, it is whether a dinner plate of the size you own will rotate without catching, which means checking the turntable diameter instead.
Quarts and liters on countertop machines
Air fryers, slow cookers, deep fryers and stand mixer bowls are sold in quarts, sometimes in liters, and the number nearly always describes the vessel rather than the food.
The Cosori CAF-LI211 mini air fryer is unusually honest about this, and it makes a useful teaching case. It is sold as 2.1 quarts. Its own description then gives the usable basket space as 6.2 inches deep by 5.9 wide by 3.1 high with the crisper plate fitted, and 3.6 high without it. Multiply those out and the space you can actually put food in is well under the headline figure, because the quart rating measures the drawer before the plate and the airflow gap are subtracted.
The opposite trick appears on oven style fryers. The Kalorik MAXX Flex Trio is sold as 26 quarts, which sounds enormous next to a 5 quart basket machine. It is an oven cavity, measured the way an oven cavity is measured, and it splits into two independent 13 quart zones with a divider. Comparing a 26 quart oven against a 5 quart basket tells you nothing, because the two numbers are measuring different geometries. Compare basket machines to basket machines within the air fryers group, and oven machines to oven machines.
What a rice cooker cup actually is
Rice cookers are the worst offender in the whole catalog because their unit is a different size from the unit you have in your kitchen drawer. A rice cooker cup is a 180 milliliter measure, roughly three quarters of a US cup, and it refers to uncooked rice. Cooked yield is usually a little over double.
Watch the same class of machine described four ways. The Zojirushi NS-ZCC10 states 5.5 cups. A comparable Zojirushi induction model in the same lineup states 1.05 quarts, which is the pot volume rather than a rice measure. The Aroma ARC-1430E commercial cooker states 14 quarts. And the Brentwood TS-10 states 5 cubic centimeters, which is a teaspoon and is plainly a broken field rather than a claim.
One listing in this catalog gets it right and shows how the others should read. The Aroma ARC-914D puts both figures in its own title, 8 cups cooked and 4 cups uncooked, which removes the ambiguity entirely.
The only reliable way to compare rice cookers is to convert everything to uncooked rice cups. A 5.5 cup machine is a two to four person machine. Anything sold in quarts needs the manufacturer’s own rice capacity looked up before it can sit on the same shortlist as the others in the rice cookers group.
Cups, on machines that are not rice cookers
Elsewhere in the kitchen, cups usually mean US cups, but the thing being counted changes. On a food processor, a stated bowl capacity is measured to the brim with dry ingredients. The working capacity for anything wet is roughly half, because liquid rides up the bowl wall as the blade spins, and most manuals state a much smaller liquid maximum.
On a popcorn popper, cups means popped volume, so an 18 cup rating is a bowl of finished popcorn rather than anything you pour in. On a coffee maker, a cup is 5 or 6 fluid ounces depending on the brand, never the 8 ounce measuring cup, which is why a 12 cup carafe fills roughly six mugs.
Square inches on grills, and the number that goes missing
Grills and griddles are sold on cooking surface area, and this unit is comparatively trustworthy. Check whether the figure is primary grate only or primary plus warming rack, because the second number is often twice the first and is the one that appears in the title.
The Cuisinart Grillster states 146 square inches, which is a genuine primary grate figure for a tabletop grill and works out to roughly four burgers. The Pit Boss 11091 pellet grill states 256 square inches. That is a real comparison because both are primary surfaces.
The failure mode here is the same as everywhere else. A ceramic kamado grill in this catalog records its cooking surface area as 13.2 square inches while its title describes a 15 inch ceramic body, and a 15 inch circular grate is well over 150 square inches. When a surface area figure is an order of magnitude away from the size of the appliance, the field is broken, not the grill.
When the capacity field is a weight, a can, or a gas cylinder
Some listings put something entirely unrelated in the capacity slot, and these are the ones that catch people out because the number looks plausible.
The Euro Cuisine YM80 yogurt maker has a capacity field reading 2 pounds. Its own description says the machine makes 42 ounces across seven 6 ounce jars, so the useful number is the jar count and the jar size, not the pounds. Juicers in this catalog frequently state capacity in pounds too, which is a pulp bin rating rather than anything about juice output.
The Zephyr Presrv beverage refrigerator states a capacity of 12 ounces, which is one can. Its title gives the real figures, 7 bottles or 108 cans. And sparkling water makers state 60 liters as capacity, which is the yield of the carbon dioxide cylinder over its life, not anything about the machine or the bottle.
Turning a capacity claim into a decision
Three questions convert almost any capacity number into something you can act on. What is being measured, the food or the vessel? Is the figure gross or usable, meaning does it include the racks, plates and airflow gaps that you cannot fill? And is the unit the same one the competing product used?
If the listing will not answer the first two, use a proxy that cannot be inflated. For ovens and fryers, that is the interior floor measurement, because it tells you whether a nine by thirteen dish fits. For refrigerators, it is the shelf width and the door bin depth, because that is what a gallon of milk needs. For grills, it is the primary grate dimension in inches. Those figures are harder to find in a listing than a headline capacity, which is exactly why they are worth finding.
