Standby Power: What Stays On When a Television and Its Peripherals Are Off

A modern television is never really off. Pressing the power button on the remote puts the panel to sleep and leaves a small computer running behind it, listening for the next command, holding a network connection, and in some configurations keeping a microphone alive. Add a streaming box, an amplified antenna and a network music player to the same wall and the corner of the room that you think of as switched off is in fact a small cluster of devices drawing power around the clock.

None of this is a scandal. Individually the draws are small. What makes standby worth understanding is that it is continuous, and continuous multiplied by a year adds up in a way that an hour of viewing does not. It also explains behavior that otherwise looks like a fault: a set that feels warm hours after you turned it off, a streaming box that updates itself overnight, a soundbar that wakes when the television does.

What is still powered when the screen goes dark

Four things typically stay energized. The first is the remote receiver, an infrared or radio front end that has to stay awake or the remote would not work. The second is the network stack. A smart television that checks for firmware, syncs an app list or responds to a phone casting to it has to keep its wireless radio associated with your router. The third is the fast start circuitry, sold under names like quick start or fast boot, which keeps enough of the main processor powered that the set can present a picture in a couple of seconds rather than going through a cold boot. The fourth, on sets with far field voice control, is the microphone array and the wake word detector.

Every one of those is optional in principle and most are switchable in the settings menu. The trade is convenience. Turn off fast start on a set like the Sony XBR65X900F and it will take noticeably longer to show a picture. Turn off the network connection and the apps stop updating. Whether that trade is worth making depends entirely on how you use the set, which is why no blanket recommendation makes sense.

The Art Mode case, where off is not off at all

One product family in this catalog makes the point unusually clearly. The Samsung Frame sets, including the 55 inch LS03D, are designed to display artwork when you are not watching television. In Art Mode the panel is lit, the backlight is working and a motion sensor is deciding whether anyone is in the room. That is not standby in any meaningful sense. If you buy a Frame and leave Art Mode on all day, the honest way to think about its consumption is as a screen that is on most of the time, not a screen that is off most of the time.

The peripherals are often the larger share

People tend to focus on the television and ignore everything plugged in around it, which is backwards for a lot of setups. A dedicated streaming box has no real off state at all. Pressing the remote power button puts the interface to sleep; the operating system keeps running, keeps its network connection and keeps doing background work. Amplified antennas are the peripheral people forget entirely. How to work out what your own corner is drawing

You cannot get this from a product listing. As covered in more detail in our piece on reading a wattage rating honestly, the power fields on television listings are unreliable, and several sets in this catalog carry a speaker output figure in the wattage field rather than a consumption figure. A listing that says a large panel draws 8 watts is describing sound.

Two approaches give you something real. The first is the manufacturer’s energy documentation, which for televisions sold in most markets includes a standby figure alongside the on mode figure, usually expressed in watts. That figure is measured to a defined standard and is the closest thing to a comparable number you will find. The second is a plug in power meter, which sits between the wall socket and the device and reports actual draw. A meter is the only way to capture a whole cluster at once, and a whole cluster is what you care about.

Once you have a standby figure in watts, the arithmetic is the same as for anything else. Divide by 1,000, multiply by the hours it sits in standby, which for most households is the large majority of the year, and multiply by the per unit rate on your own bill. The point of doing it yourself is that the answer is genuinely different in different places and at different tariffs, so a figure printed in an article would be wrong for most readers.

What you can actually change

The blunt instrument is a switched power strip that cuts the whole cluster, which works well if the group is genuinely idle overnight and badly if anything in it needs to stay reachable. Cutting power to a streaming box means it downloads its updates the next time you use it rather than while you sleep. Cutting power to a set with fast start disabled anyway changes very little.

The more targeted options live in the menus. Fast start or quick boot can usually be turned off. Voice wake word detection can be disabled on sets that offer it. HDMI control, sold as CEC under a dozen brand names, is worth understanding rather than blindly disabling: it is what lets one remote turn the whole chain on and off together, and turning it off can leave a soundbar or box powered when you thought you had shut everything down.

There is also a purchasing angle. A very large panel such as the 100 inch Hisense U8K has a correspondingly large on mode draw, but its standby figure is not meaningfully different from a small set’s, because standby is a function of the electronics rather than the panel. Screen size drives viewing consumption. The number of always on boxes around the screen drives standby consumption. If you are trying to reduce the second one, consolidating three streaming devices into one does more than any setting change, and it is worth browsing the streaming media player listings and the television listings with that consolidation in mind rather than adding another box to the pile.
